Authentication
Authentication is the process of determining that “you are who you say you are,” for the purposes of accessing online services. Duke uses the open-source tool Shibboleth to provide authentication to online services. At Duke, you authenticate to most online services with your NetID and a password and often, your chosen method of multi-factor authentication (MFA). Some Duke services are also accessible via a OneLink account. In addition you may change your password and your settings using the Account Self Service Tool.
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
Multi-factor authentication, also known as two-factor authentication (2FA), provides an extra layer of security before accessing an online service. MFA is based on something you know (your password) and something you have (your phone or a hardware token, such as a YubiKey). At Duke, multi-factor authentication is required for many sites and services, including Duke@Work.
