There are three ways to use groups in Kuali Build. You can use native Kuali Build groups, Group Manager synchronized groups, or access Group Manager groups via API (integration) calls.

Use this form to request any groups your app may need: Kuali Build Group Request

Native Kuali Build Group

Group that is manually maintained by a Kuali Build user who has been granted group administration rights. The group only exists in Kuali Build.

  • Allows management of group membership
  • Allows adding roles to a group and assigning members to those roles
  • Best for small, stable groups with little turnover
  • Kuali Build groups are limited to 800 members.
  • Kuali Build developers can see and use any/all Kuali Groups.

Group Manager Synchronized Group

Group maintained in Group Manager and synchronized to Kuali Build for use with a Build app.

  • Group is synchronized with a Kuali Build group.
  • Group management occurs in Group Manager rather than Kuali Build.
  • Good fit for large dynamic groups that would be cumbersome to maintain by hand.
  • Subject to Kuali Build’s 800-member group limit.
  • Kuali Build developers can see and use any/all Kuali Groups.
  • Cannot use Kuali Build group roles

Group Manager Integration

A Kuali Build app can include an integration that will check to see if a person is a member of a group and can add or remove a group member.

  • Group membership may be managed by the integration or in Group Manager.
  • Group is only available to Kuali Build apps that the integration has been shared with.
  • Can check to see if a person is a member of a group (native Kuali Groups cannot do this).
  • Can display group members as a pick list in your app.
  • Requires that OIT develop a custom integration for a specific Kuali Build app. Subject to resource constraints.
  • Kuali Build gadgets (fields) and workflow cannot reference these groups.

*Group Manager is the user-friendly front-end to Grouper.
