Microsoft Office: General Information

License Information

This software may only be installed and used by Duke faculty, staff, and students. There are separate license restrictions and activation methods for students and employees, but the versions of the software are identical.

Faculty/Staff

There are three different options. For help choosing the right version, click here.

• Volume-licensed standalone version
  • Duke-owned computers only
  • Unlimited installations/activations
  • Windows version activates via KMS or MAK; Mac version does not require activation
  • Available as a free download
• Office 365
  • Online and downloadable versions
  • Install on up to five devices per user
  • Works on Duke-owned or personal devices
  • Activates with NetID; deactivates after employment ends
• Work at Home Version
  • Available for work-related home use
  • Must uninstall upon leaving Duke (per license agreement)
  • To access, visit the software site

Students

There are two different options. For more details, click here.

• Office 365
  • Available online or as a local download
  • Install on up to five computers or mobile devices
  • Activates with Duke NetID
  • Stops working after graduation—get the graduation copy first
• Graduation Copy
  • One-time download, limited to one copy
  • Available only while enrolled
  • Perpetual license on one computer after graduation
  • Access during your final semester only

The Microsoft Campus Agreement is funded by OIT and DHTS and offers software at no cost to the Duke community.

Support & Tutorial Information

Duke does not have a support agreement with Microsoft. Professional Microsoft support is not included in the campus agreement.
