NetID: Password Sync FAQ

Why are you syncing passwords between Duke University and Duke Health?

We are making the change to help simplify the end-user experience.  Having one login with one password for access to all Duke applications and services will reduce the confusion caused by having different passwords for different environments.

Does this mean that my current passwords will change or be affected?

Your current password or passwords will not change or be synced until you initiate a password change.

Where do I go to change my password?

All users can change their passwords using the NetID Tool: https://identity.oit.duke.edu/manager/admin/netid

Will this change my password on Duke Health and Duke University applications?

When you change the password for your Duke account, the password change tools will now automatically update your password for both Duke University and Duke Health.  This will include all applications that leverage OIT and DHTS authentication resources, but not those that use their own passwords.

How often will I be forced to change my password?

Effective May 2021, Duke implemented a new password policy that eliminates the need to change NetID passwords, unless compromised, for most users. The new policy is in alignment with national standards that suggest short passwords, that are changed frequently, are less secure.

The updated password policy removes password expirations and will no longer require Duke Health users and sponsored guests to regularly update passwords associated with their Duke NetID, which is synced with all users’ Duke Health Enterprise (DHE) accounts. In addition, the option to update passwords using CTRL+ALT+Delete is no longer available.

Will this sync happen instantaneously?

Once the password is changed on either side, it will be synced within seconds to all authentication systems in both the University and Medicine environments.

What are the password complexity requirements?

All passwords must include:
  1. at least 12 characters (in which 5 are unique)
