CLEAR is a secure service that confirms a person’s identity in real time. It does this by combining information from your device, personal details, scanned documents, facial recognition, and trusted data sources to make sure you are who you say you are.

Who is eligible to use CLEAR?  

All users with a valid government-issued photo ID and mobile phone number. Members of the DKU community are not eligible. 

What will I need to verify?  

Youʼll need a government-issued photo ID and a mobile device to snap a quick selfie.  

CLEAR supports government-issued photo IDs from most countries, including:

  • Passports
  • Driver’s licenses
  • National identity cards
  • Residence permits (for foreign nationals or visa holders)

To be accepted for verification, your ID must:

  • Be valid and not expired‍
  • Have the name and photo clearly visible
  • Be officially issued by a recognized government authority

If your document type isn’t accepted or fails repeatedly, try using a passport, which has the highest success rate globally.

Do I need to download the CLEAR app to verify my identity?   

No, verification is completed within a secure browser.  How long does the initial verification take?  Initial verification happens in real-time and takes about 90 seconds. After this one-time setup, future verifications take only seconds. 

What personal information will CLEAR be collecting and sharing with Duke?

CLEAR shares only the information necessary to complete verification with Duke, and always with your consent. You'll see exactly whatʼs being shared before you proceed. 

CLEAR performs certain checks on the information that you provide to verify your identity and may share information about these checks with a partner whose services you are choosing to use. This may include checks to confirm that you are you and that the information you provide is accurate. 

How is CLEAR at Duke different from CLEAR at the airport? 

CLEARʼs secure identity platform helps create friction-free experiences by verifying you are YOU. At Duke, the same trusted technology leveraged at the airport is being used to simplify identity in order to deliver fast, secure, and convenient experiences. Verifying your identity is completely free and does not require a CLEAR membership. Once verified, your identity can be reused at any location where CLEAR is accepted, not just at Duke. (Note: Certain services, like access to CLEAR lanes at airports, still require a CLEAR membership and are not included in this verification process.)

Does CLEAR require fingerprints or iris scans for the Duke verification process?   

No, if itʼs your first time using CLEAR, youʼll snap a selfie and upload a government-issued ID. CLEAR will use your selfie and government-issued ID to create a reusable identity so it can recognize you whenever youʼre verifying with CLEAR.

Isnʼt the picture the same as an iris scan?   

No. The CLEAR verification process used outside of the airport is based on facial authentication. Facial authentication can be completed with a simple selfie taken on your phone.   

How can I learn more about what CLEAR and Duke will do with my data?  

Any data you provide to CLEAR will be covered by CLEARʼs Privacy Policy. Any data that Duke receives from CLEAR will be covered by Duke's Privacy Policy. You can visit CLEARʼs Privacy Policy and Duke's Privacy Policy to learn more.

Should I use my personal or work email to enroll?  

Using your personal phone number and email address when you enroll with CLEAR allows for the most seamless verification experience across CLEARʼs ecosystem of partners. 

Does this mean I can skip the line at airport security?   

No, CLEAR identity proofing is not the same as CLEAR+, which allows you to move faster through airport security in designated CLEAR lanes. 

If I already have CLEAR+, do I need to verify with CLEAR?   

Yes, but your experience will be as simple as snapping a selfie. As an existing CLEAR+ member, enter your phone number and snap a selfie to complete the verification.
