Director of Human Resources
As the Director of Human Resources, Martay Smith works closely with OIT leadership to understand the organization's goals and strategies related to staffing, recruiting, and retention. She is responsible for developing, coordinating, and implementing policies, processes, training, initiatives, and surveys that support OIT's HR compliance and strategy needs. Additionally, she is in charge of administering HR programs such as compensation, disciplinary matters, disputes and investigations, performance and talent management, recognition, and training & development.
Martay first joined Duke in October of 2012 as a Compensation Analyst with Rewards & Recognition. Later, she transitioned to OIT as an HR Analyst in 2015. Quickly proving herself to be an asset to the team, she was soon promoted to Manager before being promoted again to Director of Human Resources.
Aside from HR, Martay supports and guides organizational initiatives, including DiversifyIT, classification planning, IT Academy development, and more. She also leads site readiness planning and implementation, such as OIT remote work initiatives, facility moves, and emergency planning. Additionally, she is an active member of the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) and the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (Cupa-HR).
Martay obtained her Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Kent State University and a Masters of Human Resource Management (MHRM) from Saint Francis University.
