OIT is migrating Duke's phone service to a modern, cloud-based platform (Webex Calling) to make it more reliable, flexible, and efficient while lowering expenses tied to maintaining older equipment. This initiative is part of the Duke's initiative to reduce costs and support the continued growth of the University and Health System.
Collaboration and Transition
OIT will work closely with departments across the University and Health System to plan and coordinate the transition. We’ll provide scheduling details and ongoing support to ensure a smooth migration with minimal disruption. This effort is an important step toward building a more cost-effective communication system that supports continued growth.
Migration Process
The migration will take place in phases to ensure a seamless transition. Over the coming weeks and months, the project team will contact each department to:
- Share your department’s migration schedule,
- Provide guidance and support throughout the process, and
- Review existing phone use to identify devices that are no longer needed.
This is a great opportunity to streamline phone inventories and ensure each department has the right tools to meet its needs.
Important Notes
- Webex Calling vs. Webex Meetings
While many people associate Webex with online meetings, Webex Calling is specifically for telephone services. You will still be able to use Zoom and Microsoft Teams for online meetings—this change will not affect those platforms.
- Phone line costs
The cost of phone line services includes all necessary expenses—such as infrastructure setup, cabling, hardware, technical support, and maintenance—required to provide and sustain reliable communication.
Next Steps
Your cooperation is essential to the success of this project. OIT will share updates as we move through each phase and keep you informed of next steps.
Thank you for your partnership as we work to deliver a modern, cost-effective communication platform for everyone.
