AWS outage resolved, Duke services restored

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has resolved the widespread service disruption that affected many organizations — including Duke systems that rely on AWS infrastructure — on Monday, Oct. 20.

The outage began early Monday morning in AWS’s US-East region and caused connectivity issues for websites and applications around the world. The problem stemmed from an internal monitoring system failure that disrupted how AWS servers communicated with each other.

Amazon reports that the issue has been fully mitigated, and affected services have returned to normal operations. While some systems experienced slowdowns during recovery, no security or data-breach concerns were identified.

Duke systems are functioning normally, though users may have noticed brief delays in accessing certain web-based tools or applications that depend on AWS.

OIT continues to monitor system performance and communicate with vendors to ensure continued stability. To receive updates about outages in real time, sign up for IT Status Alerts.
