How to Add and Disconnect the ChatGPT SharePoint (OneDrive) Connector
Overview
This article provides step-by-step instructions for adding the ChatGPT SharePoint connector to your workspace and disconnecting it when it is no longer needed. The SharePoint connector allows ChatGPT to securely access, search, and summarize documents stored in SharePoint.
Note: Not all apps are enabled for the Duke account.
Adding the SharePoint (OneDrive) App
1. Log in to ChatGPT: Navigate to https://chatgpt.com/ and sign in with your netid@duke.edu account.
2. Open Settings: Click your profile menu in the lower-left corner and select Settings.
3. Access Apps: In the settings panel, select Apps, then click Explore apps.
4. Select SharePoint: From the list of available apps, search for or choose SharePoint and click Connect.
5. Authenticate: You will be redirected to the Duke sign-in page. If you are already signed in, you may be logged in automatically.
6. Connected: A confirmation banner will briefly appear at the top of the screen.
How to use it in your chats:
1. The SharePoint app is integrated into chat
2. In a chat, click the plus (+) icon and select SharePoint (if not visible select More)
3. From within a chat, you can ask questions such as:
- “Search SharePoint for the 2025 Expo spreadsheet.”
- “Summarize the product roadmap in SharePoint.”
- “Find the presentation about the Q4 goals.”
Disconnecting the SharePoint (OneDrive) Connector
1. Log in to ChatGPT and open Settings.
2. Go to Apps.
3. Locate the Enabled connector "SharePoint" in the list of Enabled Apps.
4. Click Select → Disconnect.
5. Confirm when prompted.
Note: Disconnecting removes ChatGPT’s access to your SharePoint files immediately. Your files remain safely stored in SharePoint and are unaffected.
FAQs
- Q: Will disconnecting delete my SharePoint files?
A: No, disconnecting only removes ChatGPT’s access. Files remain safely stored in SharePoint. - Q: Can I reconnect later?
A: Yes.
Note: There have been updates to the SharePoint file picker. Previously, all users could use it to add specific files to their messages. OpenAI has retained this functionality only for users who had it configured earlier. All new or reconnecting users should now use the full SharePoint integration (see instructions above). - Q: What permissions does ChatGPT need?
A: ChatGPT requires read-only access to the SharePoint files you choose to query.
ChatGPT can only access SharePoint files you personally have access to.
No data leaves your organization’s permission boundaries.
The connection is secure and revocable at any time.
Best Practice
Only connect ChatGPT to SharePoint when document assistance is required. Disconnect the connector at any time if it is no longer needed.
