Creating and using a 1Password Passkey for use with Duke Unlock
Prerequisites to setting up 1Password Passkey for use with Duke Unlock:
- You’ll need to already have a Duke 1Password for Business account or Duke 1Password for Students account. For details see: 1Password | Information Security (duke.edu)
- If you have not created your 1Password account, please see: https://duke.service-now.com/kb_view.do?sysparm_article=KB0034959 for instructions.
- Have your NetID login information saved as an entry within 1Password.
- 1Password browser extension installed for all browsers that you use.
- 1Password desktop application installed on your computer.
Instructions:
Open the 1Password application on your computer.
Click “All Items” on the left navigations panel.
Search for your NetID entry using the search box at the top of the 1Password window.
Click once on the entry so that it is highlighted.
You should see Passkey available in a light purple square at the top.
Click “Use passkey”
This will open your default browser to the 1Password Passkey entry for Duke at https://passkeys.directory/details/duke/.
Under "Where to set up" click “https://unlock.duke.edu”.
Once logged in, you will be on the “Join the Duke Unlock Pilot” page.
Click the radio button for “Yes” followed by the “Register this device” button.
For Device nickname type “1Password”
Click "Register device with Duke Unlock".
A 1Password prompt should appear in the upper right of your browser window. Ensure the radio button for your NetID is selected.
Click “Update Existing” at the top right of the window.
Click the Save button at the bottom right corner of the screen.
If you have additional Shibboleth logins related to your work, you may need to scroll down to see the Save button.
At the prompt of “Registration successful! Try it now.”, click “Try it now.”
You will be returned to a login screen in the Unlock web page., with a large green box.
Click the link for "Use Duke Unlock to go passwordless"
A 1Password prompt should again appear in the upper right showing your NetID and a purple passkey Sign In button. Click the button, and you should be good to go.
You may want to test a few other sites just to be sure.
