Microsoft 365 Copilot: OneNote Class Notebook Setup Guide

Overview
Your Microsoft 365 Copilot license gives you access to downloadable apps through your Microsoft 365 Copilot account.
Because this is a web-based environment, app locations and availability may change without notice.
If you notice any changes, please use the feedback form below to report them.
Sign in to Microsoft 365 Copilot
Navigate to https://mail.duke.edu and log in using your NetID, password, and multi-factor authentication.
1. Click the App Launcher (the 9-dot icon) in the upper-left corner.
2. From the list of apps, select More apps to open Microsoft 365 Copilot.
3. Click All apps and locate Class Notebook.
4. On the Welcome page, click the first icon to start creating your class notebook.
Create a Class Notebook
1. Select Create a class notebook.
2. Enter a name for your notebook and click Next.
TIP: Create a separate notebook for each class. For example:
- Spanish 2 P1 (1st period)
- Spanish 2 P2 (2nd period)
NOTE: Each notebook name must be unique and cannot include these characters: # / * ? " | < > : . % ' \
Add Another Teacher (Optional)
You can add additional teachers with the same permissions as you.
1. Enter their names and click Next.
Add Students
Students can be added individually or in bulk.
NOTE: Students must have a Microsoft 365 Copilot organizational account.
Add Individually
1. Type a student’s name and press Enter.
2. Repeat until all students are added, then click Next.
TIP: The app will suggest matches as you type.
Add in Bulk
1. Copy and paste a list of student names separated by semicolons (;) into the text box.
2. Wait for names to resolve. For unmatched names, retype or remove them.
3. Click Next when done.
Set Up Student Notebook Sections
Default sections are created automatically.
To add more:
1. Click Add section.
2. Click Next when finished.
TIP:
Use activity-based section names (e.g., Handouts, Class Notes, Quizzes) rather than unit-based names for easier navigation.
NOTE:
Sections can be added, removed, or deleted later.
Finalize Your Class Notebook
Review the Teacher’s notebook and Student’s notebook structure.
Click Create to generate the notebook.
Use the provided link to share with students.
In OneNote desktop, go to Class Notebook > Manage Notebooks to retrieve links.
TIPS:
- Each class has a unique link.
- Add content to the Content Library before sharing the link.
- Keep a copy of the link for your records.
Help Students Access Their Notebook
Students can find new class notebooks in their OneDrive > Shared folder.
