Shibboleth: Back Button Error

You receive an error that states:

 

This error is common and occurs when the authentication service that Duke uses, Shibboleth, detects something wrong with your web browser's connection to the website you are trying to access.

There are various reasons why this may occur, ranging from network connectivity, improper permissions for the site, old/bad cookies or links, among others however the most common reason is old/bad cookies or links.

To correct the error,

  • for old/bad cookies:
  • for old/bad links/shortcuts/bookmarks:
    • navigate to the website by doing a search or by manually typing in the website you are trying to go to in the address bar.
      • Example 1: You click on a link for LMS training that was emailed to you or you have saved, and it produces the error, manually type in https://lms.duhs.duke.edu/Saba/Web/Cloud and you should have the login screen load properly
      • Example 2: You receive notification that your paycheck is ready for viewing in Duke@work and you receive the error when clicking the link, manually type in work.duke.edu and log in.

Any saved favorites and/or shortcuts that are saved as https://shib.oit.duke.edu/idp/AuthnEngine will cause this error as this is the authentication page not the page you are trying to get to.

The log in process is:(an example)

You type in work.duke.edu
You are redirected to https://shib.oit.duke.edu/idp/AuthnEngine to log in
Upon successful log in, you are directed back to work.duke.edu.
