Real-Time IT Updates, Right When You Need Them
When technology works, it can go unnoticed. But when it doesn’t, it can quickly cause disruption to classes, meetings and daily operations. With so many of us dependent on technology, working in hybrid environments, timely information about service interruptions is essential. The Office of Information Technology (OIT) recommends Duke University students, faculty and staff to sign up for IT status alerts to stay informed.
Duke’s IT status alert system notifies the community when key technology services — including the university’s wireless network, email and other online systems — are affected by planned maintenance, unexpected outages or system upgrades.
OIT uses an external vendor to ensure IT status information remains available at all times.
To subscribe, visit status.oit.duke.edu and click the “SUBSCRIBE TO UPDATES” button in the upper-right corner. Subscribers can select the specific services they wish to monitor and choose how to receive notifications — by email, text message (SMS) or RSS feed. Email alerts provide detailed updates throughout an incident, while SMS notifications are sent when an outage begins and when service is restored. Consider registering a non-Duke email address for notifications in the event an outage affects university email services.
Community members can also follow the Office of Information Technology on X (@DukeOIT) for real-time updates.
“Registering for IT alerts ensures you will know about service outages, maintenance, and critical updates that may impact the services that you rely on,” said Vernon Thornton of OIT Operations Management.
