Follow-Up: Changes for Existing Claude accounts
Last week, we shared that Duke will soon implement Anthropic’s Claude as an approved enterprise AI tool. As part of the implementation, Duke will claim the duke.edu domain within Anthropic. Because of the way Anthropic manages institutional email domains and user accounts, some existing Claude accounts will be affected by this change. This message provides additional guidance for existing Claude users who may be affected by those changes.
Necessary action
Beginning Monday, Aug. 17, existing Claude users with duke.edu email addresses will have a 60-day transition period to export any content you wish to keep before these accounts are moved or deactivated as part of Anthropic’s domain management process.
- If you use Claude with your NetID@duke.edu account:
Your NetID account will become a Duke-managed Claude Enterprise account. Additional information about that transition will be shared before any changes occur.
- If you use Claude with firstname.lastname@duke.edu (or another @duke.edu address that is not your NetID):
You will need to take action.
Claude for Duke-related work
Duke’s Claude offering is not a free service. Faculty and staff are able to use the service on a pay-as-you-go basis through departmental funding. Students may access Claude using their DukeCard Flex accounts. (Additional information about requesting access, funding, and student Flex options will be included in the official Claude launch announcement.)
When Claude becomes available on Monday, Aug. 17:
- Obtain an official Duke Claude Enterprise account through Software Manager using your NetID@duke.edu address.
- Export any conversations, projects, prompts, artifacts, or other content you wish to retain. You can then transition your work to your Duke Claude Enterprise account, as supported by the Claude platform.
Claude for personal use
If you only use Claude for personal projects, detach your duke.edu email address by:
- Creating a free Claude account using a personal email address
- Exporting any conversations, projects, artifacts, prompts, or other content you wish to retain to your new personal account, as supported by the Claude platform.
Claude API users
If you currently access Claude using Anthropic API keys, Duke will soon provide managed access to Claude models through the Duke AI Gateway. Additional information about API access, supported models, and onboarding will be shared separately.
What happens after the 60-day transition period?
After the 60-day transition period ends:
- Existing firstname.lastname@duke.edu (and other non-NetID@duke.edu) Claude accounts will no longer be accessible.
- Any content that has not been exported before the deadline may no longer be available.
- You will need to sign in with your NetID to access your Duke Claude Enterprise account.
How to export your Claude data
If your account is affected, we strongly encourage you to export any conversations, projects, prompts, artifacts, or other content you wish to retain before the transition period ends.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Why are some Duke accounts affected while others are not?
Anthropic’s domain management process requires organizations to manage accounts associated with their institutional email domain. Existing accounts using Duke email addresses other than NetID@duke.edu cannot continue operating independently after Duke claims the domain. This is part of Anthropic’s identity management process and is not a Duke policy decision.
- Will my conversations automatically move to my new account?
No. You should not assume that content will be migrated automatically. Please export any conversations, projects, prompts, artifacts, or files you wish to retain before the transition deadline.
- What happens if I do nothing?
Once the 60-day transition period ends, affected accounts will no longer be accessible. Content that has not been exported may no longer be available.
