Expanded ChatGPT Edu now available at Duke at no cost
Starting Monday, Aug. 24, an enhanced no-cost version of Standard ChatGPT Edu will roll out throughout the day for eligible Duke students, faculty, and staff. An updated agreement with OpenAI removes consumption and credit-based usage – no fund codes required.
The enhanced ChatGPT Edu offering provides capabilities comparable to OpenAI’s $20-per-month ChatGPT Plus plan at no cost to eligible Duke users, within Duke’s secure, managed environment.
New features include:
- Advanced reasoning models with GPT-5.6
- More message and file uploads
- Complex image creation
- Voice capabilities
- Expanded memory and context
- Projects, scheduled tasks, and custom GPTs
- Codex now available for Standard account users
- ChatGPT Work across desktop, web, and mobile
- Early access to new features
ChatGPT Edu is available through Software Manager. Note: Usage limits apply. ChatGPT Edu is not available for Duke Kunshan University or Duke Health.
ChatGPT models will continue to be available by API via the Duke AI Gateway for developers and others who wish to build AI-powered applications and workflows.
OpenAI ensures that Duke data is not used to train its models.
What do I need to do
No action is required.
Current users of Duke’s previously provided Standard and Premium ChatGPT Edu accounts will be automatically transitioned to the new enhanced offering throughout the day on Monday, Aug. 24.
Costs accrued for Duke Premium ChatGPT accounts, month to date, will be forgiven, and users will not be billed for those associated charges.
ChatGPT Pro Offering Coming Soon

Plans are underway to make ChatGPT Pro accounts available to the Duke community at a discounted rate for individuals who require more advanced capacity.
ChatGPT Pro is intended for power users who need the expanded capabilities and higher usage limits available through OpenAI’s commercial ChatGPT Pro plan.
