Anthropic’s Claude AI is now available at Duke

UPDATE: The Student Flex option is not currently available. OIT continues to work with Anthropic to identify an approach that best supports our students. We will share additional details as they become available.

Duke University and Duke Health have expanded their portfolio of supported AI tools with the addition of Anthropic’s Claude, a family of large language models. Claude offers capabilities that may be especially valuable for advanced reasoning, software development, coding workflows, and other specialized use cases, and it provides secure, institutionally managed access to one of today’s leading AI platforms.

Importantly, data entered into Duke’s Claude environment will never be used to train Anthropic AI models.

For many everyday AI activities, including writing, brainstorming, research, and summarizing information, ChatGPT Edu and Microsoft Copilot remain no-cost options available to the Duke community.

The enterprise agreement with Anthropic reflects Duke's continued investment in providing modern AI capabilities that support education, research, clinical care, administration, and innovation while maintaining strong standards for security, privacy, and governance.

Note: Duke's Claude offering is not available to Duke Kunshan University (DKU) at this time.

Consumption-based, pay-as-you-go access

Claude is not a free service. As of Aug. 17, Duke's Claude service will be available through a flexible pay-as-you-go model. Once the HIPAA-enabled environment has been implemented, the Claude service will be available to Duke Health. 

Rather than purchasing annual licenses, users only pay for the AI services they consume. Faculty, staff, researchers, clinicians, and affiliates access Claude using a fund code or sponsored research grant, while students subscribe using DukeCard FLEX.

• Request Claude through Software Manager using a fund code or sponsored research grant.
• Pay only for the AI services you use.
• New accounts include a default monthly spending cap of $200.

Users whose work requires additional capacity may request a $1,000/month expanded cap through Software Manager. The approval process confirms the funding source, acknowledges any additional costs, and notifies the associated business manager.

Built for Duke University and Duke Health

To meet the unique security, privacy, and regulatory requirements of Duke University and Duke Health, Claude is offered through two separate enterprise environments while remaining part of a single service. 

The University environment supports teaching, learning, research, writing, coding, grant development, administrative work, and other non-PHI use cases.

The Duke Health environment is configured to support approved HIPAA-regulated workflows and the use of protected health information (PHI) in accordance with Duke Health policies and a Business Associate Agreement (BAA). 

To meet the distinct needs of Duke University and Duke Health, each environment maintains separate user administration, security settings, spending controls, feature configuration, and audit history.

Projects, conversations, and files remain within the environment where they were created and do not transfer between the University and Duke Health environments.

Responsible Use

As with any AI technology, users remain responsible for reviewing and validating Claude-generated content before relying upon it in academic, research, administrative, or clinical work. Existing Duke policies governing data protection, acceptable use, research, intellectual property, and patient privacy continue to apply.
