Network: Registering a Machine on the Duke University Wireless Network

Question

How do I register a new computer, phone, or other network device on the wireless network?

Answer

When you want to connect to the network on the Duke campus, you have to first register that device. Note that this process is for people who have an active Duke NetID & password - if you're just visiting or are not a Duke affiliate, you'll want to use the Visitor wireless network instead.

Registering on the wired network requires a few more steps & considerations. See the article on registering a machine on the wired network for more information.

If your device has an internet browser, this is a quick process.

  1. First, make sure you are connected to the Duke network. You may see other networks in the list, including Visitor; you want to connect to Duke in order to go through this process.
  2. Open your network browser and go to http://dukereg.duke.edu. (Note - if you try to go to another website first, like www.google.com, it will redirect you to the DukeReg site to complete the registration process.)
  3. You'll be presented with Duke's Computing Security & Privacy policy. You'll need to read and agree to this policy in order to register your computer on the network. Click I Accept to accept the agreement and continue.
  4. On the next page, type in your Duke NetID and password. Click Login to continue.
  5. Fill out the form to register your device.
    • Click Detect to find your device's hardware (MAC) address. This is an identifier that is unique to your computer, phone or whatever device you are registering.
    • Add a description of the device to help you tell what it's for. Example descriptions might be "Jon Duke's Macbook", "Jane Smith's Kindle", or something similar. Many customers want to register multiple devices, so the description can help you tell it apart.
    • Select the Operating System for your device. The list has several options - choose the one that best fits your device.
    • Click Register to register your device.

If your device doesn't have a web browser, you'll need to go to a computer that's connected to the network already to register the device. From that computer:

  1. Open up a web browser and go to http://dukereg.duke.edu
  2. You'll be presented with Duke's Computing Security & Privacy policy. You'll need to read and agree to this policy in order to register your computer on the network. Click I Accept to accept the agreement and continue.
  3. On the next page, type in your Duke NetID and password. Click Login to continue.
  4. Fill out the form to register your device.
    • Type in your device's Hardware (MAC) Address. This is an identifier that is unique to your computer, phone or device you are registering. For help locating your device's MAC address, search the knowledge base using the search box above for your device and MAC address (i.e., "iPhone MAC address").

NOTE:  By default you will receive a dynamic IP address. If you need a reserved IP address (for a printer or a server), you will need to register the device and then contact the Service Desk for further assistance.

NOTE:  After a device is registered it may take up to 45 minutes for the DHCP server to deploy your newly registered MAC address. The device will continue to pull a registration IP address until DHCP deploys and the device renews it's DHCP lease.
