Microsoft (Office) 365: End of Support for Basic Authentication

Overview

Microsoft is soon ending support for Basic Authentication (which relies on sending usernames and passwords with every request, increasing the risk of attackers abusing users' credentials) and requiring Modern Authentication service. Duke users will only be able to access their Office 365 account via our secure authentication service (Shibboleth). Modern authentication reduces the risk of attackers accessing Duke email accounts.

OIT is communicating directly with users who are using Basic Authentication. You may receive multiple emails referencing your use of Basic Authentication on multiple operating systems (iOS, Mac, Windows, etc.).

To update your applications to use Modern Authentication, delete your current Office 365 account from your device’s mail and calendar applications and create a new Office 365 account. The new account will require Modern Authentication. See the support articles in the list below.

Important! If you have issues accessing your Duke account on a mail or calendar app, access Outlook via web browser.

Supported Applications

The following operating systems and applications support Modern Authentication. OIT recommends Microsoft Outlook. Outlook on the web is available via any web browser. For instructions on setting up Office 365, click the desired application.
