Director, Human Resources
Since 2008, Scooter Freeney has directed the human resources function for the Office of Information Technology. The goal of the human resources office is to partner with operations and senior leadership to build a work culture and environment that promotes and rewards performance, is inclusive and diverse, provides work that is challenging, rewarding and career enhancing, and is aligned and supportive of the vision, mission, policies, and guiding principles of Duke University.
Scooter’s efforts to promote and expose IT careers to women and underrepresented minorities led to him being awarded a Blue Ribbon Presidential Award for Diversity. His partnership with senior leadership and operations has resulted in an environment with a less than 4% attrition rate, an average tenure of 12 years and the implementation of development program that provides staff with new career opportunities. In 2014 OIT had 21 internal promotions—in 2008 there were zero.
Before Duke, Scooter held various human resources roles ranging from recruiter to Regional HR Director with several different Fortune 100 companies and private companies.
Scooter holds a B.S. in organizational development and a B.S. in information systems management both earned at Colorado Christian University. Scooter also earned a MBA with a certificate in management information systems from East Carolina University.
