Martay Smith is the Director of Human Resources in the Office of Information Technology. She has responsibility for coordinating all hiring, workforce development, promotion retention and performance evaluation programs. Martay also supports campus-wide workforce development programs in the technology domain, including supporting Duke’s growing Diversity IT program, which has been in place for the past three years and is a forum for networking events, discussion groups, speakers and outreach events with the mission to increase diversity in the IT workforce at Duke. Related, Martay also serves as the organizing lead for OIT’s internship programs, which target underrepresented minorities from NCCU, Durham Tech, Wake Tech and other minority-serving institutions into intern positions with OIT and within IT at Duke. In recent years these internships have extended to Duke female undergraduate students interested in tech careers, including through the Duke DTech program and the national Rewriting the Code program.
Prior to joining OIT, Martay worked in Duke’s central HR group as a recruiter and as a compensation analyst. Before Duke, Martay was employed by Penn State Hershey Medical Center as a recruiter, she holds a BA in Psychology from Kent State and a MA in HR from St Francis University. Martay has also earned her Professional in Human Resources (PHR) Certification from the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM).
