ViewsFlash survey software
What is ViewsFlash?
ViewsFlash by Cogix is a Web-based authoring and publishing system for conducting surveys and creating polls and quizzes online. Among its capabilities are customizable look-and-feel, survey scheduling, optional authentication, and real-time results reporting.
Duke is transitioning from Viewsflash to Qualtrics, another online survey tool, beginning in spring 2011. Read more about the transition to Qualtrics.
Do not use ViewsFlash to capture or distribute any sensitive or secure information such as data that requires HIPAA or FERPA compliance or personal identify information. More details below.
Getting access to a polling place
To use ViewsFlash, you will need access to a polling place. A polling place is a password-protected area where you can create multiple surveys. Typically each department or group has a polling place already established. Check with your department or group first. If you need to establish a polling place, you may do so by contacting the OIT Service Desk. You will need to provide a name for the polling place and the Duke NetIDs of each person who will act as an administrator.
Logging in
To log in to use the application, go to https://survey.oit.duke.edu and login with your Duke NetID and password.
Community support
Ownership for ViewsFlash is shared between Trinity College of Arts & Sciences Office of Technology Services, which is responsible for functional oversight, and the Office of Information Technology is responsible for technical oversight. Click here for complete details.
Questions about ViewFlash may be directed to the user community via the survey tool mailing list.
Survey tool mailing list
A "surveytool" mailing list has been established to provide information and news regarding ViewsFlash survey software, and operates as a user forum where survey users can send inquiries to the rest of the survey community.
You can subscribe to this mailing list by visiting: https://lists.duke.edu/sympa/subscribe/surveytool, or emailing sympa@duke.edu with only "subscribe surveytool" in the message body.
We encourage Duke's ViewsFlash user community to actively participate by asking questions, sharing tips and tricks in order to educate each other.
Web authentication
To choose an authentication method, go to Settings → Survey. The two most common options are “None,” which leaves your survey open to everyone, and “Basic,” which prompts the user to authenticate with their Duke NetID and password. “None” can only be used with a one page survey.
While ViewsFlash surveys can be secured using Duke's NetID authentication system, they should not be used to capture or distribute any sensitive or secure information such as data that requires HIPAA or FERPA compliance. Personal identity information such as social security numbers should never be requested. For more information on these guidelines, please visit the IT Security Office.
