DukeStream And YouTube

One of the most common questions we hear is when to use DukeStream and when to use YouTube. While both services provide streaming, they have very different purposes, benefits and challenges.

YouTube is an excellent platform if the main audience of your videos are the general public (e.g.) security is not an issue for you and YouTube's terms of service are not a concern. There is no easy way to restrict access to videos on YouTube. If your create a channel for your deparment or program and have it "claimed" by Duke, it will not only be able to feature videos on Duke's main YouTube channel, but the current length restrictions will no longer apply. It also makes it really easy to embed your videos into other websites. For more information on YouTube at Duke, please visit the YouTube At Duke information page.

DukeStream is designed for schools or departments that need more secure access to their videos or would like to avoid YouTube's terms of service. Download access to the files can be secured using NetID using the standard Webfiles interface. DukeStream is really a collection of servers – QuickTIme, Windows Media and Wowza, which streams Flash or H.264 compressed movies. Use of any of these services require you to manually convert (or transcode) your videos to very specific formats and then build custom players or links. All of this information is documented on the DukeStream website.
