While You Record - Recording Information
General Recording Tips
- Whenever possible, conduct a test recording at your proposed venue with your Site Administrator prior to the date of your actual recording. A pre-recording test gives you a better sense of the room's acoustics and will give you a chance to answer any technical questions you have before your session.
- If you conduct a pre-event recording test in a room with video pickup, be sure to include a test of how well the camera captures your writing on the whiteboard/chalkboard.
- Eliminate background noise in your room as much as possible.
- Use one of the microphones listed on the OIT Preferred Peripherals page if possible. Built-in microphones should not be used unless there are no other options. See the Link Service Desk for a selection of peripherals that may be available for loan.
- If you use a wireless microphone, including a lavaliere or 'lapel' microphone, ensure that it is on before you begin recording.
- Do not attempt to use a lavaliere microphone as if it were a podium microphone. It's pickup range is too small for it to be used effectively for area pickup.
- Although you can hear them well, the microphones you use will probably be unable to pick up questions from the audience well. Be sure to repeat any questions from the audience into your microphone so that both the question and the answer will be in the recording.
- Speaking a bit louder when farther away from the microphone will help capture audio better; the microphone is very sensitive up close.
- Large, clearly printed letters will be more easily seen on recordings; Use good markers as ink from old markers will not be easily seen on the recordings. Using white chalk is best for rooms with blackboards. If possible use a document camera rather than writing on the whiteboard.
Managing Your Recordings
- Managing your recordings could include trimming "tops and tails," making a recording public or locking it down to a select group of people, deleting unneeded content, or even creating synchronized notes. Contact your Site Administrator for assistance with any of these activities or questions about other possibilities.
Do I have to be online (plugged into the network) to complete a recording?
No, the Recorder allows for "Offline" recordings. With this ability, a user may record audio/video/screen cap/PowerPoint without network connectivity. The system will capture the content and store the material locally on the recording computer. Once network connectivity is restored, an upload of the content to the Panopto server will be initiated.
For more information about recording with Panopto please contact your Site Administrator.
