DukeCapture Overview

Overview

DukeCapture is the next generation automated lecture and event recording solution currently being deployed across the Duke campus.  It allows for automatic publication to many different services including streaming and podcasting servers such as DukeStream, Blackboard, and iTunes U. It also features new functionality called "DukeCapture Mobile," which allows anyone to record audio, video and their screen using a personal computer and then publish through the same system as the classroom based recorders. Events can be captured in audio, video and VGA formats – or any combination of the three – and require no special technical expertise on the part of faculty or others being recorded.

Departmental/school participation in DukeCapture Mobile will be determined by each particular department or school's technology group. DukeCapture is centrally administered by Duke's Office of Information Technology and is available to schools and departments throughout Duke and the Duke University Health System via your local information technology professionals. DukeCapture is currently not available directly to end users via OIT.

DukeCapture started its rollout in July 2010 with full production implementation scheduled by July 2012.

Note: DukeCapture and DukeCapture Mobile cannot be used to record, store or distribute any media that requires HIPAA or FERPA compliance.

Benefits of DukeCapture include the following:

Low cost for schools and departments – A typical DukeCapture classroom-based recorder costs approximately $2,000 per room. (Information containing the latest pricing and procedures for ordering DukeCapture appliances can be found here.) This figure does not include any needed A/V integration, upgrades, or ongoing hardware support costs. DukeCapture is centrally supported by OIT, which covers all licensing costs, central servers and supporting applications, support fees, delivery servers, and other infrastructure costs. There is no cost to schools/departments to use the DukeCapture Mobile software.

Highly automated – The DukeCapture server can be scheduled for a single lecture or for an entire semester at a time, eliminating the need for a technician to be present to initate the recording.

Versatile – DukeCapture can capture audio, video, and VGA in multiple combinations (VGA encompasses anything displayed on a presenter's computer screen, from basic PowerPoint slides to video and complex animations). Once captured, content is quickly processed into an interactive, searchable web format or an audio or video podcast format. DukeCapture Mobile takes recording out of the recording and on to your personal computer to allow you to record audio, video and your screen anytime anywhere.

Manageable – DukeCapture allows specified Site Administrators to carefully control how the media is captured and delivered. A wide variety of reports can be generated to help administrators and faculty understand how content is being viewed.

Integration friendly – DukeCapture has the ability to provide links which can be seen in Blackboard and to present content automatically in iTunes U via RSS feeds.
