Duke Wiki and Confluence Wiki to merge
Currently, Duke has two wikis, both based on the Confluence collaboration software by Atlassian:
- Duke Wiki, which carries the URL wiki.duke.edu
- Confluence (the header says, simply, "Dashboard") carries the URL confluence.oit.duke.edu
OIT plans to pare down to one wiki for better use of resources (both system and people) and more-timely updates.
Late in 2011, we updated both wikis, so that they are now using the same version of the software, allowing for the easy transfer of material from one to the other. Administrators will have the entire month of February 2012 to review their Confluence spaces to determine what they want to update, save as is, or discard. We urge administrators to take advantage of this opportunity to 'clean house"—to revise outdated content, cut unnecessary pages and delete unwanted attachments.
During March, OIT staff will respond to requests from administrators of Confluence spaces to move these spaces from Confluence to Duke Wiki. After the moves, administrators will have to check the security settings on their spaces (because individual and group permissions won't move over with the content), and they'll have to fix links (because page names will all change), but the bulk of the work will have been done automatically.
Beginning on April 1, 2012, OIT will begin to update Duke Wiki on a regular basis. Because the two wikis will no longer be using the same software version, wholesale movement of spaces from one wiki to the other will not be possible. Between April 2 and May 31, however, administrators will still be able to copy the content of pages in Confluence and recreate them in Duke Wiki. Early in June 2012, we will take the Confluence wiki out of production.
Administrators of Confluence spaces can count on regular communication from OIT staff leading up to the project launch on March 1, and then throughout the various phases of the transition. If you have any questions about the process in advance of those communications, please contact Mark Turner.
