Visitor wireless network off afternoon of Sept. 3

To ensure that Duke's wireless network is available for faculty, staff and students, the visitor network surrounding Wallace Wade Stadium will be turned off between 4 and 10 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3.

The visitor network was introduced just before the beginning of the 2010-11 academic year to allow wireless access without NetID registration, and it has proved extremely useful. Nearly 3,500 unique users connected through the visitor network during the first-year move-in on Tuesday, Aug. 24, for instance. However, because heavy use by visitors to campus during events like this Saturday's football game and employee kick-off event can interfere with the core use of the wireless network by faculty, staff and students, the visitor system will be shut down as a precaution.

The Duke wireless network will be available for use by registered devices. AT&T and Verizon have also enhanced the cellular capacity in and around the stadium recently, in light of the increased demand for mobile service we see during games, so devices relying on cellular connectivity from AT&T or Verizon will get service.
