Internet2 service degradation

Status: Outage Resolved
Type: Unscheduled
Impact: Service degraded
Areas affected: Network
Start: Jul 10, 2012 - 10:30 AM
Update Time: Jul 11, 2012 - 8:50 AM
End: Jul 10, 2012 - 11:48 PM

RESOLVED 11:48pm Tue. 7/10: This outage was resolved late in the evening on Tuesday. This outage, caused by construction in Virginia, impacted a major southeastern Internet2 link and the North Carolina educational/research network's link to Internet2 more generally.

-----

Internet2 research network connectivity between Duke and other North Carolina educational institutions was interrupted at approximately 10:30am today. No direct service impact to commodity Internet service is extant due to this interruption; however, some services normally routing over the Internet2 research and educational network may see higher latencies than are typical.

The root cause of this interruption is believed to be a possible fiber optic cable cut in Virginia. Duke is receiving information updates from MCNC/NCREN, Duke's network service and Internet2 provider, and we will update this advisory when more information is available.
