Network Registration System

Status: Maintenance Complete
Type: Scheduled
Impact: No anticipated impact to service
Areas affected: Network
Start: May 15, 2012 - 6:00 PM
Update Time: May 17, 2012 - 2:23 PM
End: May 16, 2012 - 12:00 AM (estimated)

A new network registration system, DukeReg, will replace the NetReg system for IP address management tonight starting at 6:00pm. The planned change has a window from 6:00pm to 12:00am, during which the system will be migrated. During this migration time the new web site www.dukereg.duke.edu for registration could become unavailable please be patient.

The new system will provide centralized management of IP addresses, DNS names and DHCP; improve security, reliability and scalability; and help in the eventual transition to IPv6.

No changes are necessary for devices currently registered on the system.

OIT will provide pointers from all current DNS servers to the new DNS servers, so old addresses will continue to work. These pointers will be active until the end of August. After that, the old DNS entries will be removed.

OIT is working directly with system administrators during the transition.

Status: Scheduled Maintenance
Type: Scheduled
Impact: Service currently available, but we continue to monitor to ensure stability
Areas affected: Network
Start: May 15, 2012 - 6:00 PM
Update Time: May 16, 2012 - 12:48 AM

UPDATE 12:45am: The network client issues reported at approximately 10:15pm were verified as having been successfully resolved. However, OIT staff have decided to revert back from tonight's change in order to ensure that network services are fully ready for the start of business on Wednesday morning. Tonight's change will be rescheduled for a future date to be announced.

UPDATE 11:45pm: Some campus network users may have experienced difficulty accessing Duke's network and Internet resources after 10:15pm this evening. Some wireless users may have be affected, and OIT received reports of wireless and wired network impacts in LSRC, Pratt and North Bldg. as well as the Tel-Com Bldg. Impact was generally limited to laptops, desktops and mobile devices using Duke wired/wireless network services; central Duke services should not have been impacted, although clients experiencing network difficulties may have been temporarily unable to reach central services.

As of 11:30pm, OIT staff have adjusted one element of this evening's change to resolve the issues experienced this evening. We are continuing to monitor this service change and will update this advisory with new information shortly.
