Access Duke's Network and Secure Sites

What is a NetID?

A Duke NetID is a unique user ID assigned to each student. You will need your NetID to access your Duke e-mail account, digital file storage, ACES (for registration and grades), Blackboard (for course information), the DukePass portal, your Duke-issued Web space, computer labs and more.

Receive and activate your NetID

Your NetID will be mailed to you in a letter.  If you do not receive your NetID letter within 10 days of receiving your Duke Blue Book, please contact the OIT Service Desk at (919) 684-2200.  Your letter will instruct  you to activate your NetID online. Make sure to choose a strong password, since you'll use your NetID to access personal and sensitive information. Remember: never share your password. Duke OIT will never ask you for your password via e-mail.

Accessing the Duke network

Duke provides free Internet access for all students on campus.  To access Duke’s free Internet, you must register your computer on the network.  Once you get to campus, simply start a browser, follow the registration instructions that appear and then restart your computer.

Wireless access at Duke

Wireless Internet is available in most classrooms, libraries and residence halls. Your laptop must support 802.11g, 802.11a, or 802.11n to access Duke's wireless network; an adapter with 802.11a/b/g/n support will provide the fastest service. Do not bring personally owned wireless access points/routers to campus, as they will impair the performance of Duke's wireless network.

Ethernet access at Duke

Each dorm room has one activated Internet/network (Ethernet) connection; you must have an Ethernet cable to connect your computer to the Internet using this connection. If you need a second Ethernet connection activated, contact the OIT Service Desk.

For more information about acceptable use of the Duke network, as well as more information about registering on the Network, please go to the Network Registration webpage.
