Duke maps get a makeover

May 8, 2009

Duke’s interactive map site – maps.duke.edu – has a whole new look.

The new interface, which went live May 4, includes immediate on-screen access to additional information about each building; better print output; shorter, more descriptive URLs; and directions from Google Maps (a high priority with users). Although you won't see it, the underlying database is prettier than its predecessor, too.

There are more map improvements to come, as well. Groups across campus are working together to define the requirements and build the functionality for the next generation of Duke maps, which will work through both computer browsers and mobile devices.

This new version of Duke's online map is largely the result of work by Mary McKee in OIT's ADS Enterprise Web Services, and it's interesting to note that McKee was among the seven Class of '05 seniors in the Information Science/Information Studies research capstone course who developed the first iteration of the interactive map.
