Paul Horner named head of IT Security Office

April 1, 2009

Paul Horner, formerly IT audit manager in the university's Internal Audit Office, assumed the role of Chief Information Security Officer for Duke on March 30.

Horner will handle IT security issues for the university, working closely with his counterpart in the Duke Health System, Rob Adams. He will coordinate campus-wide security efforts through the Security Liaisons Group, which pulls together IT security people from all the departments and schools across Duke.

Prior to joining Duke two and a half years ago, Horner worked at Sara Lee, SAP, IBM and Campbell Soup, in positions ranging from programming team lead and product consultant to systems development director. He has more than 30 years of experience in IT management, security and audit.

As Chief Information Security Officer, Horner will report to Chief information Officer Tracy Futhey. In announcing Horner's appointment, Futhey commended the IT Security Office, "a team of three strong individuals — Herb Commodore, Rachel Franke and Artem Kazantsev — who have provided exceptional service to Duke over the years and especially during the period that the position of Chief Information Security Officer was vacant." She also recognized Klara Jelinkova, who filled the chief security officer role on an interim basis, and who initiated important new security efforts, such as the Security Liaisons Group and the Information Security Steering Committee. The ISSC brings together senior officials from the university and the health system to address information security governance.
