Connect to Duke's Wireless Network

Most laptops and many mobile devices have 802.11a/b/g/n ("WiFi") equipment built in. If you're not sure whether or not yours has such a device, refer to your equipment manufacturer.

If you don't have the equipment, you'll need to purchase a wireless adapter. These cards can be purchased from the Duke Computer Store or a local retailer for less than $50. The minimum recommended specifications for a wireless adapter are:

  • 802.11g
  • Support for 802.1x and WPA

However, we recommend purchasing a card with the following specifications for optimal performance on Duke's wireless network.

  • 802.11a/n
  • Support for 802.1x, WPA, and WPA2

To connect to the network:

  1. If necessary, install your wireless adapter according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  2. Configure your adapter to access the wireless network. You will need to set the network name (SSID) to "DUKE" and ensure that encryption is disabled.
  3. Once connected to the DUKE network, open a Web browser and visit http://netreg.duke.edu. Follow the instructions to register your computer for wireless network access.
  4. After completing the registration, wait approximately 2 minutes, then complete a repair or release/renew procedure on your computer. Alternatively, you can simply reboot your machine. Once complete, you should have full Internet access through the wireless network.
