Request a Static IP

You may create a static IP using the NetReg system either when you register your machine or by visiting NetReg after you have registered and changing your registration.

If you have not yet registered your computer:

  1. Connect to the network.
  2. Open a Web browser and connect to http://netreg.duke.edu.
  3. When prompted, choose Advanced Registration.
  4. On the machine registration screen, enter the desired vanity hostname.
  5. Under the Mode heading, choose static.
  6. Click Continue to finalize registration of your vanity hostname.

If you have already registered your computer:

Point your browser to http://netreg.duke.edu and enter your NetID and password. You'll be directed to your main NetReg page, where you'll see a list of all computing devices you've registered using your NetID.

You'll probably see one or more Hostnames which look like this:

Hostname Hardware Address Mode IP Address NETREG-XXXXX.DORM.DUKE.EDU 000F1B1C1D1E dynamic 0.0.0.0

You can convert this dynamic Hostname/IP address assignment to a static IP/vanity name by doing the following:

  1. Click on the hostname.
  2. On the next page, replace NETREG-XXXXX with a hostname of your choice.
  3. Scroll down to the Mode section of the page. From the pull-down menu, change dynamic to static.
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Continue.

In approximately 5 minutes, the vanity hostname will be assigned in the DNS system, and your computer will be able to obtain the designated static IP address. We recommend that you continue using DHCP to obtain your IP address and network configuration information, however, as this ensures your computer will receive any necessary changes.
