Enterprise TSM Backups

The mission of the OIT SSI Infrastructure Backup services group is to provide our users with high-availability access to their restore data and at-will access to our server for backups. It is our goal to provide quality technical support, to administrate the service's resources responsibly and to develop data policies that will benefit the majority of our users while offering customization to those users with special needs. It is our primary objective that the service be non-intrusive, easy to use, easy to access and a reliable resource in a crisis.

Costs and terms of OIT TSM backup services

OIT charges departmental users of TSM a fee that covers their share for use of the central backup resource (e.g., server infrastructure, TSM software licenses, tape and disk resources, etc.) OIT staff will be happy to discuss cost and service levels; submit a request for new backup services to begin, or contact the TSM administrators team at tsm-admins@duke.edu.

The below offering is for backing up non-OIT departmental supported storage.  For OIT provided storage including backups see OIT Storage.  The pricing is based on Gb required to maintain backups:

TSM Backup Charges: 

  • Initial one-time setup cost: $500 per server
  • Annual cost per Gb of on-site backup: $0.25/Gb
  • Additional annual cost per Gb for off-site backup: $0.25/Gb

This pricing is calculated based on the amount of Gb required to backup the primary storage.  The amount is always more than the primary storage as it includes cost of each incremental Gb of data backup.  The amount of Gb required for backups is affected by the change rate of the data and frequency & retention of backups.

Note: customers of OIT storage pay a rate of $0.30/Gb.  This rate is higher because this is measured pre-backup where the above costs are measured how much backup media is required post backup.  The additional cost is associated with the additional 20-30% of space required to track incremental backups.
