Configuring buddies

Adium refers to people you instant message with as "buddies." In order to communicate with someone you first must enter them into your buddy list.

  1. Go to the Contacts menu and select Add Contact.
  2. In the Jabber ID field, enter the Jabber ID of the user (Duke users will use yourbuddy'sNetID@jabber.duke.edu). To find your buddy's NetID, visit Online@Duke and click on Directories.
  3. Optional: Enter the user's name in the Alias field.
  4. Optional: If you have created groups, select the group for that user (the default group is Buddies).
  5. Click the Add button. The other user should receive a notification that you want to add them as a buddy. When the user approves this message, you will be able to see the contact's status (online, away, etc.). NOTE: You may receive a notice from the other user's client asking for authorization for the other user to see your status.

Optional: Configuring Buddy Groups

Adium allows you to organize your buddies into different groups (e.g. family, friends, co-workers etc). This can be useful if you maintain a large list of buddies.

  1. Go to the Contacts menu and select Add Group.
  2. Enter the name of the group in the field provided and click Add.
  3. You should be able to drag users into the appropriate groups. NOTE: Be careful not to drag one buddy over another. If you do this, a green plus sign will appear and you will be asked if you want to combine the users. You will have an opportunity to cancel if this accidentally happens.
