Group E-mail and Shared Mailboxes

Group e-mail

You may be thinking about "group e-mail" in two different ways: large-scale mailings to whole classes of people, such as an e-mail to all faculty; or mailings to a group defined by the group itself, such as a committee setting up an e-mail group list so that they can communicate amoung the group easily.

If you're thinking about the first kind of group e-mail, you should read the Duke University policy on group e-mail, which restricts large-scale communications (to more than 100 people) and defines procedures for obtaining clearance for mailings like these.

If you're thinking about the second kind of group e-mail, you'll want to read more about the Sympa group e-mail application, which allows you to set up and manage a mailing list for a group.

Shared mailboxes

Departments and groups sometimes benefit from using shared e-mail mailboxes, which provide access for more than one person. To learn more about how they work, read our shared mailbox FAQ page or learn how to set up WebMail for shared mailboxes.
