Using AFS with Macintosh OS X
To begin using AFS, read the instructions below. If you need assistance, contact the OIT Service Desk.
Configuring the AFS client
- From the Utilities folder, start the Terminal program.
- At the prompt, type the following:
cd /private/var/db/openafs/etc
- Press ENTER.
- At the prompt, type:
sudo pico ThisCell
- Press ENTER.
- At the password prompt, type your Mac OS X user password and press ENTER.
- In the text editor window, type:
acpub.duke.edu
- Press CONTROL-X.
- At the prompt, type Y and press ENTER.
- In the Terminal window, at the prompt, type:
sudo pico CellServDB
- Press ENTER.
- At the password prompt, type your Mac OS X user password and press ENTER.
- In the text editor window, type (or copy and paste) the following at the top of the file:
> acpub.duke.edu #Duke/private OIT public clusters
152.3.233.4 #clarke.acpub.duke.edu.
152.3.233.5 #delany.acpub.duke.edu.
152.3.233.6 #ellison.acpub.duke.edu.
- Press CONTROL-X.
- At the prompt, type Y and press ENTER.
- In the Terminal window, type:
sudo cp config/afsd.options.sample config/afsd.options
- Press ENTER.
- At the password prompt, type your Mac OS X user password and press ENTER.
- Restart your computer.
Accessing files and directories using OS X
- Start the Terminal program.
- At the prompt, type klog followed by your NetID and press ENTER.
- When prompted, type your NetID password and press ENTER.
- Quit the Terminal program.
NOTE: You will not need to repeat the instructions above, even if you log in and out. However, if you restart your computer, you'll need to repeat the above steps.
- From the desktop, double-click the hard drive.
- On the desktop, double-click the AFS icon. Wait several moments for folders to appear in the AFS window.
NOTE: If the AFS icon is not on the desktop, go to the Finder and double-click the AFS icon.
- Double-click the acpub.duke.edu folder.
- Double-click the users folder.
- Double-click the folder displaying the first letter of your NetID.
- Double-click the folder displaying the second letter of your NetID.
- Locate the folder displaying your NetID (this may take several moments; if nothing seems to be happening, move the mouse).
- Click to select your NetID folder.
- Select File > Add to Favorites.
- Open the Acpub folder and verify that you can see files and folders without restriction.
To access this folder in the future, from the Finder toolbar, click Favorites. In native Mac OS X applications, you may select this folder from Open and Save dialog boxes.
