Carl McMillon
Director, Data Center Operations
Carl McMillon is the director of Data Center Operations at Duke University. In his role as director, Carl oversees OIT’s 24/7 data center and campus computing service operations. These systems support applications such as campus infrastructure, classroom technology, campus computing labs, ePrint, cluster computing, purchasing, payroll, general accounting, student records and alumni/gift development.
Carl came to Duke in 1977, working as a data expeditor for Duke University Hospital Business Office. Two years later, he transferred to Duke Hospital Information Systems (DHIS) and began supervising data center operations at Duke University Hospital. He worked at the Health System, eventually becoming Director of Infrastructure Operations, until his transition to OIT in 2007.
As director at the Health System, Carl was responsible for establishing and maintaining a comprehensive IT infrastructure operational strategy that ensured availability of services and safeguarding of sensitive information. This included providing leadership and strategy for open and mainframe systems administration, database support, storage management, e-mail and messaging, data center operations, the help desk, service management processes and business continuity. He led the implementation of several key projects, including a virtualization strategy for Intel and Linux systems using VMWare, Duke Storage Area Network (DSAN), a comprehensive change management process, a major incident management process and an extensive business impact analysis (BIA) for IT services in the three hospitals and the outpatient clinics.
Carl is certified in IT Service Management and has undergone IT leadership training from MOR Associates.
