Communications Infrastructure

Bob Johnson, Director
(919) 668-1762 or robert.l.johnson@duke.edu

Communications Infrastructure Services (CIS) operates the voice, video, and data networks and systems for the university, and voice for the health system. CIS is fully converged: architecture, implementation, and operations of the systems are analyzed in unison. These systems include:

  • Enterprise TDM voice systems (Lucent 5ESS, Avaya S8700, Cisco CallManager): 35,000 subscribers
  • Enterprise Voice Mail Systems (Avaya, Cisco Unity): 15,000 subscribers
  • 800MHz Trunked Radio System: ~ 800 subscribers
  • Data Network across University buildings: 48,000 ports
  • Wireless Network across University: 1,700 Access points
  • Internet connectivity: 7TB+ per day to and from the Internet
  • Cable Television: 2200+ subscribers
  • DHCP & DNS Services
  • Paging service (local and wide area): 12,000+ pagers; 460,000+ pages per month
  • Communication center: 80,000 calls per month

The organization uses a three-tier support model to best align our resources in support of the converging infrastructures and customer need.

Operations

Yvonne Gould, Senior Manager
(919) 681-4816 or yvonne.gould@duke.edu

Operations is responsible for the administration, installation and field maintenance of the various campus cable infrastructures (copper/fiber), customer voice premises equipment (phones), and wireless network field equipment.

Systems and Operations

Keith Gentry, Senior Manager
(919) 668-6483 or keith.gentry@duke.edu

The Systems and Operations group works collectively and individually within CIS to provide 24/7 technical support for all Telecom telephony switches, associated telecommunications systems and Layer II switched data network.

Design and Architecture

Design and Architecture provides the system architecture, interoperability services and third-level support for all the campus communications systems and infrastructure. These systems and infrastructure include the LAN/WAN, converged voice/video networks, campus DHCP/DNS and Internet access (research and commodity).

In addition, this group provides research and development of next-generation technologies, both internally and through associations (Internet2, NLR, MCNC, CSG).

Communication Center

Judy Heath, Senior Manager
(919) 684-3373 or judith.heath@duke.edu

The Communication Center is responsible for local and wide area paging services at Duke. Additionally, our 24x7 operators respond to requests for directory assistance, provide notification service for emergent situations, and escalate after-hours telephony outages.
